Overview
If you're under 65 and don't have employer coverage, you have options — including ACA marketplace plans (often with significant subsidies), private plans, and short-term coverage for gap situations.
We'll review your household income, preferred doctors, and prescription needs to identify the plans that actually save you money — not just the ones with the lowest sticker price.
And because we're independent, you get unbiased guidance across all the carriers that serve North Carolina.
A closer look at healthcare
What health insurance covers
A major medical health plan covers doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, preventive care, mental health, maternity, and emergency care. ACA-compliant plans can't deny coverage or charge more for pre-existing conditions, and preventive care is covered at 100% in-network.
Subsidies are bigger than people realize
The expanded premium tax credit means many middle-income households — including the self-employed and early retirees — qualify for meaningful subsidies. A quick income check often surfaces $200–$800+ in monthly savings that people didn't know they were entitled to.
Marketplace vs. off-marketplace vs. short-term
Marketplace plans (Healthcare.gov) are the only place to claim subsidies. Off-marketplace plans from the same carriers sometimes offer better networks or benefits when no subsidy applies. Short-term plans are cheap but not ACA-compliant — useful only for true gap situations.
Your options
ACA Marketplace plans
Subsidized plans through Healthcare.gov. Many people qualify for tax credits that dramatically lower the monthly premium.
Private individual & family plans
Off-marketplace options from major carriers, sometimes with better networks or benefits than the marketplace equivalents.
Short-term medical
Temporary coverage for gaps between jobs, after graduation, or before Medicare kicks in.
Self-employed coverage
Strategies that work for freelancers, small business owners, and 1099 workers — including HSA-eligible plans.

Quick subsidy check
Share household size and projected income — we tell you within minutes whether you qualify for a tax credit and roughly how much.
- 2
Match networks and prescriptions
We check your doctors and meds against each plan's network and formulary so you don't end up paying out-of-network rates.
- 3
Compare total annual cost
Not just premium — we look at deductible, max out-of-pocket, copays, and prescription tiers to estimate your real annual spend.
- 4
